The company was founded by Emil Eckardt in 1899 at its current location in Herdecke on the Ruhr as a shovel and spade factory Eckardt & Co. GmbH. After Emil Eckardt's death in 1928 and the company's subsequent bankruptcy in 1929, a group of entrepreneurs around Dr. Otto Thomashoff, the father of the longtime sole managing director Carl-August Thomashoff, the company, which existed under the name Idealspaten - und Schaufelwalzwerk. Eckardt & Co. GmbH was continued. The company's main product, the IDEAL spade rolled from one piece, has been part of the company name since 1929. The worldwide increasing demand for construction tools led to a very positive development of the company in the following decades, which lasted until the 1960s. The merger with A. Bredt & Co. in Witten, which took place in 1971, was already a consequence of the emerging development towards the exchange of muscle power with machines.
