Leonhard Weiß (1880–1938) founded the company in 1900 as a track construction company and received the contract to build the section of the Aalen – Neresheim – Ballmertshofen line on the Härtsfeldbahn. This was followed by work for the city of Göppingen from 1912, for example earthworks for the cemetery expansion and various new roads. After the purchase of the site on Fabrikstrasse in 1921, an office building with a residential building was built there. After Leonhard Weiß 'death in 1938, the company was taken over by the widow Ottilie Weiss, son Walter Weiss and son-in-law Werner Schmidt sen. continued. From 1938 the company was also active in Crailsheim. The company headquarters there was relocated to Satteldorf in 2001. Until 1997 the company was run exclusively by the Weiss and Schmidt families. After a restructuring and amalgamation of the previously independent locations in Göppingen and Crailsheim, the company has been run by several managing directors since 1998. The range of products offered by the company has been continuously expanded over the years. The Leonhard Weiss Group has numerous branches and subsidiaries in Germany and other European countries. It achieved a construction output of 1.322 billion euros in 2018 and employed over 5,800 people at the end of 2019.
