  • About us :

Südwestdeutsche Salzwerke AG, based in Heilbronn, is the parent company of the SWS Group and employs around 1,000 people at all locations in the salt, waste disposal, logistics and tourism divisions Years ago, the salt was extracted from layers of salt up to 50 meters thick. The Berchtesgaden salt mine belonging to the company has a long tradition, in which salt has been extracted using the so-called “wet mining process” since 1517. The raw material is also used for the company's own vacuum salt production in the Bad Friedrichshall saltworks. This salt works has a capacity of around 180,000 tons per year. A large number of evaporated salt products are manufactured in various refinement steps. At around 300,000 tonnes per year, the Bad Reichenhall salt works is two thirds larger. In this saltworks, which has an outstanding position in Germany, the brine obtained in Berchtesgaden is refined. In addition, natural spring brine from the Reichenhall basin is used in the Bad Reichenhall saltworks to produce the well-known Bad Reichenhaller alpine and spice salts. In addition, Südwestdeutsche Salzwerke AG operates the two visitor mines in Bad Friedrichshall and Berchtesgaden as well as the salt museum in the old saltworks in Bad Reichenhall there are also tourist facilities on the subject of salt and brine. These popular leisure attractions are at the same time interesting, complementary evidence of mining economic history and worthwhile excursion destinations for young and old.
