In 1972 MILEI GmbH was founded in its current form, it emerged from Milei-Gesellschaft mbH. At that time, the Japanese group Morinaga Milk was co-owner of the company. In the same year, the construction of the production facility at the Leutkirch site in Allgäu began, and three years later the production of whey powder and lactose began. After the introduction of the first large-scale ultrafiltration system in 1976, whey protein concentrates became the main product of MILEI. In 1990 the company began not only with the production of lactulose, but also became the first company in the world to produce lactoferrin. Between 2002 and 2007, Milei introduced instantization technology in spray drying, resulting in the new product Molkolac Instant. Furthermore, the ultrafiltration capacities were continuously expanded and a fourth spray dryer was installed. In 2009 Morinaga Milk's stake in Milei increased to 70% and international R&D cooperation intensified. In the course of restructuring measures in 2010, all corporate functions were merged in Leutkirch. Morinaga Milk has held 100% of Milei since 2012. Not least because of this, the groundbreaking ceremony for the new work "MILEI 2.0" was celebrated in March 2014 as part of a Japanese Shinto ceremony. In the new plant, which was completed in 2018, milk is processed in addition to the raw material whey.
