  • About us :

The Usselner dairy can look back on an unusual and eventful history: In 1898, 35 farmers in the Upland formed a cooperative. At that time, carts of oxen and horses were used to deliver 500 liters of milk a day from farms in Usseln and the surrounding villages to the "Upland Mountain Dairy" a modern, larger production building was built in which milk is still or is still being processed today. Mergers with smaller neighboring dairies led to further growth in the following years. The milk delivery exceeded the processing capacities, a large part of the milk was sold to other dairies. A supply contract, later a cooperation contract, was concluded with Milchwerke Köln / Wuppertal ("Tuffi"), which then resulted in a merger of the two dairies in 1994. A year later, the dairy in Usseln was closed and the milk from 290 farmers was transported to other dairies. During this time, farmers who manage their farms according to ecological guidelines were looking for a place to process their milk. Some of them had already gained experience of having their organic milk processed separately in a dairy and marketing it themselves. The group of farmers founded the Upländer Bauernmolkerei GmbH together with environmentalists, private and business people. With the support of the municipality of Willingen and the State of Hesse, the dairy was acquired and, after renovation and repairs, put back into operation in September 1996. Initially, 18 farmers supplied an annual volume of one million liters of organic milk. In order to use the facilities to full capacity, milk was bought in from conventional farms in the region and processed separately. Since 2009 only organic milk has been processed in Usseln. The concept of the Upland farmer's dairy is regional, even if a small part of the products is marketed nationwide. Fresh milk, buttermilk, cream, sour cream, sour cream, crème fraîche, butter and hand cheese are marketed through regional wholesalers, regional wholesalers, food retailers and regional goods stores. Three types of organic school milk are delivered to schools in the region. The Upländer Milchmuhseum is now located in the former dairy building of the "Upländer Gebirgsmolkerei" و In May 2002, the Upländer Milchmuhseum opened its doors in the old dairy building. School classes, locals and visitors to the region can find out in a vivid and entertaining way how milk is obtained and processed. A milk café and the dairy shop complete the offer.
