For over thirty years, the Altenschlirf community in Vogelsberg has been offering living and working space for people with and without disabilities. Around 340 people now work together at three locations in the neighboring villages of Altenschlirf, Schlechtenwege and Stockhausen.

Live, work, experience art and culture
On the basis of the holistic view of man in anthroposophy, a comprehensive living space is created: 16 house communities are around 140 adult people in need of help in which they live together with those responsible for the house and other helpers in different forms of living. 13 workshops, including biodynamic agriculture, a bakery and a wood workshop, enable active participation in working life. Numerous cultural educational offers open up new horizons, artistic courses support the residents in looking for an expression for their own experiences and feelings - be it through painting, making music, in dance, sculpture or in writing.
A lot has happened since the Altenschlirf community was founded. The view of people with disabilities has changed, an encounter at eye level is desired. Due to the ratification of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the law in Germany also regulates more comprehensively than before that social participation and the most barrier-free coexistence are wanted and should be promoted.
Encounter at eye level
In the anthroposophical institutions, too, a change has been taking place for years - not only in dealing with people in need of help, whose individual needs and ideas are much more taken into account, but also in the staff. A generation change is taking place there: While those responsible in the pioneering phase usually acted as a matter of course based on the ideals of the founding movement, new employees today are asking for effective instruments that structure their work, expect transparent and efficient structures.
Life is constantly evolving here too. However, our commitment to a community in which people with very different abilities, opportunities and talents live and work together and in their diversity enrich one another is constant - a first building block for a world in which one day perhaps the whole of society will have such a community has become.
