About us :
The story of Melchiorsgrund began in 1980: a handful of committed people bought a large, old half-timbered farm in Vogelsberg. Under the impression of the growing drug problems of the post-war generation, they wanted to create a natural and as self-determined place to live for drug-addicted and mentally ill young people. Building on experiences in the anthroposophical specialist clinic and community "Seven Dwarfs" in Salem in southern Germany, the founders developed the concept for a cultural therapeutic approach Village. In 1981 Melchiorsgrund was recognized as a medical rehabilitation facility. Even then, many patients had psychiatric diagnoses in addition to their addictions, so they belonged to the group of people with so-called double diagnoses. With simple means and the greatest possible personal effort, several wooden houses were built by the beginning of the 1990s. Today the village comprises two half-timbered farmsteads and nine log houses. There is a farm, the farm's own cheese dairy, a shop, an administration building with a tea room and winter garden, as well as the workshop. The workshop / studio area in the Werkhof includes a joinery building and a painting studio. The large hall offers space for the theater workshop and other cultural events. In the doctor's house there are practice and meeting rooms, a laboratory and baths for medical applications. For around 20 years, the patients lived with doctors, therapists and other employees as well as their families in a community. This concept changed around the turn of the millennium. The generation change among the employees, but also the changed needs of the patients led to a stronger separation of life and work: instead of living together, support and advice have emerged, which support the patients in the sense of everyday coaching in strengthening their autonomy and self-responsibility. While there were certainly some concerns about the facility and its residents in the population of the surrounding villages in the early years, Melchiorsgrund is now in good contact with the region. In 2007, the constructive cooperation with the population in Altenburg won first place in the nationwide competition “Our village has a future” for the state of Hesse. In June 2015 there was a joint theater production with the cultural association in Hopfgarten on the occasion of the 850th anniversary of the village. Out of consideration for the fellow players and guests from Melchiorsgrund, the citizens decided to celebrate the celebration without alcohol on the day of the theater performance - a beautiful expression of lived integration and consideration. The opening of the “Wild Cow” in April 2017 represents a further step “outside”: Melchiorsgrund runs a café and a small shop in a former bakery shop in Renzendorf, where, among other things, the farm's own raw milk cheese is offered. Since the good cooperation As part of a major “Faust” theater project in 2015, Melchiorsgrund maintains a close relationship with the Altenschlirf community, an anthroposophical living and working community for people with and without disabilities. At that time, several residents from Melchiorsgrund had taken on major roles in the production. At the beginning of 2016, the joint theater play was continued: Participants from both institutions began rehearsing Hendrik Ibsen's "Peer Gynt". The drama by Norwegian Ibsen, also known as "Nordic Faust", is based on the content of the Goethe classic, which was developed together - Ibsen has created a tragicomic title hero with deep questions about life who can definitely be seen as a representative of our time. The various participants worked on the demanding work in more than ten workshops; most recently, a joint intensive week at the foot of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau in the Bernese Oberland put the finishing touches to the production. The performances finally took place in September 2017 in Melchiorsgrund and Altenschlirf.
