    On January 1, 1888, the mine director Wilhelm Castendyck founded the company Gerolsteiner Sprudel W. Castendyck Gerolstein and initially had the mineral water bottled in clay jugs. The chemist Carl Remigius Fresenius recommended the water because of its high content of natural carbonic acid. The company logo, consisting of an octagonal red star and the lion of the Gerolsteiner city coat of arms, was registered in 1889 and thus protected. The company exported water to Sydney in Australia as early as 1895.
