The music city of Klingenthal is a small town in the Saxon Vogtland and borders directly on Bohemia. The manufacture of musical instruments moved into the city as early as the middle of the 17th century. They were violin makers who came from Bohemia. The construction of wood and brass instruments was added later. The harmonica found its way into the city in the 19th century and soon dominated the cityscape with a large number of production facilities. The boom was so great that Klingenthal had already become the largest German harmonica center by 1840. The production of accordions began when Adolph Herold brought the accordion from Magedeburg in 1852. Since the harmonica was a very similar instrument to the still simple accordion at that time, the replica was easy for the manufacturers. As a result, well-known brands such as Barcarole, Contasina, Firotti, Horch, Royal Standard and the accordion building became an important branch of industry in the so-called music angle. Numerous patented inventions still testify to the creativity and inventiveness of the engineers and accordion builders. In 1948 several companies were combined to form a "state-owned enterprise", the "VEB Klingenthaler Harmonikawerke", while other companies merged into production cooperatives or became semi-public. In 1973 all the remaining companies came under the umbrella of VEB Klingenthaler Harmonikawerke, which grew to over 3,500 employees.
