Johann Conrad Develey was born in Lindau in 1822. He initially made medium-hot and hot mustard according to a French recipe, but invented sweet mustard in 1854. In 1874 he was awarded the title "Royal Bavarian Court Supplier". In the 1970s the company was taken over by the Durach family - at that time mainly a sauerkraut producer. In 1968 the company Develey took over the delicatessen specialist Specht (fine sour delicacies), in 1992 the mustard manufacturer "Bautz'ner Senf", the market leader in the new federal states 1995 the French mustard manufacturer Reine de Dijon, founded in 1840. The Düsseldorfer Löwensenf GmbH has been a subsidiary of Develey since 2001. They also produce sauces for system catering by order. In 2002 Develey bought the Austrian market leader for mustard, Mautner Markhof Feinkost, 100% mother of Born Feinkost, a Thuringian company.
