  • About us :

In 1923 Lieselotte Denk and her husband Wilhelm founded Café Engel in Marienbad. According to the recipe of the Reichenbach monks, wafers were filled with butter, sugar, almonds and hazelnuts and baked. Café Engel grew rapidly in the years between the two world wars and supplied other cafés in the spa triangle with Marienbad and Karlsbader wafers. After the end of the war, Marlene Wetzel (1922–2019) had to leave Marienbad in the course of the expulsion of the Sudeten Germans and emigrated to Dillingen on the Danube. Here she founded the Wetzel - Karlsbader Oblaten- und Waffelfabrik GmbH together with Hans Hackspacher in 1948. In the 1960s, Marlene Wetzel, Bavaria's first female confectioner, decided to use more machines for the factory production of wafers and wafers. This marked the beginning of the company's rise to become the wafer market leader. In the period between 1980 and 2000, various companies were bought and the company Bavaria candles was founded. In 1992 Hans Hackspacher senior died. and his son Hans Hackspacher and Marlene Wetzel-Hackspacher took over the management. In August 2017, Hans Hackspacher Jr. died, Christian Deisenhofer and Karolina Ernst took over the management. In 1982, Marlene Wetzel-Hackspacher was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit for her entrepreneurial achievements. In April 1983 she was the first woman in the Free State to be awarded the certificate of honor for services to building up the Bavarian economy. The city of Dillingen made her an honorary citizen in 2003.
