Ludwig Roselius from Bremen found his passion for black hot beverages in his own family company Roselius & Co., where he specialized in coffee imports and thus made the company one of the largest coffee importers in Europe. After his father died in 1902 at the age of only 59 and doctors diagnosed death from excessive coffee consumption, the young Roselius looked for a method to remove the toxic caffeine. Together with the commercial chemist Karl Wimmer and the chemistry student Johann Friedrich Meyer, he came across the solution, which he also patented as a decaffeination process in Germany.
