Steinway & Sons (often called Steinway) is a German-American manufacturer of grand and upright pianos. The company was founded by Heinrich Engelhard Steinweg (Henry E. Steinway) and his sons in New York City (Manhattan) in 1853. Since then, Steinway & Sons has successfully registered more than 125 patents. Steinway & Sons grand pianos and upright pianos are manufactured in Hamburg and New York (Queens). Steinway & Sons also manufactures grand pianos and upright pianos in Japan with the Boston brand and in China with the Essex brand. The sales network includes the Steinway Halls. The parent company, the stock corporation Steinway Musical Instruments, under whose roof Steinway & Sons numerous other musical instrument manufacturers and brands are gathered, was founded in August 2013 by John Paulsons Paulson & Co. bought and taken off the stock exchange.
