  • About us :

Senator is a large, global writing instrument manufacturer from Germany. The company was founded in 1920 by Georg Merz and the master turner Justus Krell under the name Merz & Krell. They were supported by Georg's older brother Friedrich Merz. The company belonged to the Merz Group and initially manufactured wooden pens and mechanical pencils. The company is headquartered in Groß-Bieberau in the Darmstadt-Dieburg district in Hesse, on the edge of the Odenwald, near Darmstadt. There are subsidiaries in France, England, India and Benelux, as well as a representative office in Russia. Former locations are Poland and the USA. The company has 250 employees worldwide. The majority of the products are manufactured in Germany, and the products now sold under the Senator brand are primarily known as promotional items. Two thirds of the reusable pens made in Germany are said to come from Senator. Senator is number 1 in Europe for ballpoint pens and number 3 worldwide (as of 2010). Around one million pens are produced every day. From 1973 to 1978, Merz & Krell produced the 120 fountain pen models for the German stationery manufacturer Pelikan, which had already been discontinued and 400NN in a new edition. With Rou Bill, the company took over the brands of a previous competitor on the market in 2000. At the time of the takeover, the product portfolio included writing implements as well as porcelain and ceramic items, glasses and crockery. Today, almost all of the porcelain items are manufactured in Germany. Plastic pens and refills are produced in the Groß-Bieberau plant. Cups were refined in the plant in Lemgo until 2013, and the refinement has taken place in Groß-Bieberau since 2013. Due to a persistent loss situation, the long-time owner Merz parted with the company in 2016 and sold it to a financial investor. Thanks to a management buyout, Senator GmbH has been a 100% family company again since December 18, 2018.
