  • About us :

The name Salamander and the logo with the fire salamander is a trademark that the Bad Buchau-born Berlin leather dealer Rudolf Moos, a relative of Albert Einstein, registered as a trademark with the Imperial Patent Office in Berlin on December 5, 1899. Inspired by the illustration of a brooch in an English newspaper, the symbol of a lizard formed the inspiration for the trademark of the first products in a shoe polish he made. Because of the planned international business, Moos used the term "salamander" from the beginning, as this word did not need a translation. This shoe polish was initially made in the basement of his shop at Friedrichstrasse 221 in Berlin. He had the shoe shop redesigned in 1903, including the professional design of the facade and logo. The first Salamander store opened with the sale of shoes at the address mentioned in Berlin on December 20, 1903. On May 8, 1904, he registered the new Salamander logo as a trademark for shoes at the Berlin Patent Office. Salamander GmbH has been running the company since 2009 with headquarters in Langenfeld (production of Salamander and Lurchi shoes, foreign branch business through local companies, global trademark rights) and Salamander Deutschland GmbH & Co. KG with headquarters in Wuppertal (German branch business, online shop) continue the brand. Both companies have been wholly owned subsidiaries of Ara AG since 2016.
