The separation of 1-3 butadiene from C4 slices is not possible by simple distillation because most of the C4-Cut compounds are close to each other and there is the possibility of formation of azototrop.
BASF was able to take advantage of the volatility of most of the compounds in a selective solvent. The NMP (Normal methyl pyrolidone), which contains approximately 8.3% by weight of water, is used as a solvent in the extraction process.
1-3 Raw butadiene is extracted by distillation and is purified in the distillation step.
