Calcium and magnesium salts in water are called hardness. In nature, water dissolves calcium and magnesium while passing through limestone. The compounds related to calcium bicarbonate Ca(Hco3)2 and magnesium bicarbonate Mg(HCO3)2 in water are called Temporary Hardness and the salts related to calcium or magnesium sulfate, chloride and nitrate are called Permanent Hardness. The sum of permanent and temporary hardness makes up Total Hardness. When calcium and magnesium are insoluble, water hardness increases. The use of hard water in industrial and utility uses, especially in boilers, leads to deposition, reducing equipment efficiency and damaging heat transfer levels in the long term.

The most common method to remove the temporary hardness of water is to use resin type hardening devices. The basis of the work of resin type hardening devices is the use of the ion exchange process by cationic resins. The properties of resins are that when they are placed in the presence of hard water, their sodium ions are replaced by precipitating ions such as calcium and magnesium in the water. In this way, by removing calcium and magnesium salts and replacing them with sodium ions, soft water is produced that does not tend to deposit. The soft water output from the hardness device is very desirable for feeding boilers, cooling towers and other industrial uses. Hardener capacity is determined based on its regeneration time during the operation period during 24 hours of operation. Basically, hardeners are selected based on the regeneration times of 8, 12 and 24 hours. These tanks are designed, manufactured and tested according to ASME SEC.8 Div.1 pressure vessel standard.
