An endotracheal tube is a breathing tube that is temporarily used to help a person breathe and can keep the airway open. This curved tube enters the trachea through the nose or mouth and acts as an airway. The other end of the tube connects to a ventilator or air bag (manual regenerator) and provides a passage for oxygen and air to the lungs.
Accumulation of secretions in the respiratory tract can cause airway obstruction, resulting in decreased oxygen pressure and increased arterial pressure, weakening the respiratory centers and acidosis. It can also cause respiratory or heart failure and lead to death. Whenever a patient's respiratory tract becomes mechanically obstructed or retention of secretions and coughing is ineffective, intratracheal intubation is performed to save the patient's life.
