African Jewel Fish is one of the average cichlids of Africa (especially West Africa) and has a very territorial and aggressive temperament; They also attack their fellow fish. The body length of adult fish in nature reaches 15 cm. This fish is mostly bottom-dwelling, it is considered as a freshwater migratory fish, and it is also very active in terms of reproduction. They have three distinctive spots along their body, which are located in the gills, the middle of the body, and the base of the tail. Or that the caudal and middle spots are pale.

Conditions for keeping in the aquarium:

Jewel cichlids should preferably be kept as monospecies (if the fish are of similar size), or eventually with very strong fish such as Congo tetras and Cynodonis catfish. An aquarium of at least 200 liters with a stone decor full of holes and shelters is suitable for them.

The ideal temperature for keeping jeweled cichlids is 24 to 28 degrees Celsius. They like hard water (hardness level 10-16) and tolerate pH between 6.5 and 7.5.

Nutrition:

Jewel cichlids are omnivorous and eat a wide variety of foods including: live food such as worms, artemia and shrimp, ready-made cichlid foods, biomar and flakes, vegetable-based foods such as algae, and protein foods such as beef heart and frozen worms. They sometimes eat their own eggs.
