Astronotus ocellatus

Oscar fish, with the scientific name Astronotus ocellatus, is one of the most well-known carnivorous ornamental fish and belongs to the Chichlidae family. It lives in fresh water and is native to the rivers of Amazon, Paraguay and eastern Venezuela. Its most famous species are tiger scar and royal scar. The length of the fish usually reaches 25-35 cm, and they live nearly 15 years in their natural habitat. They have good resistance to diseases.

Conditions for keeping in the aquarium:

The optimal temperature for scar storage is 22 to 26 degrees Celsius. A temperature of more than 28 degrees prevents fish from spawning. Some saltiness of the water is necessary to maintain the Scars, and it increases the hatching speed of their eggs. The water hardness required by Scar is 10-15 dH and its optimal pH is 6.5-7.5.

Scars are quite aggressive and it is best to raise them from childhood with the aquarium resident group to avoid incompatibility with other aquarium inhabitants. Carnivorous fish of the same size as Oscar are suitable for his neighborhood. If you are going to introduce a young scar to an aquarium, it is better to first settle other neighbors in it and then introduce your scar or finally do this at the same time; Because Oscars do not accept strangers in their native territory easily.

Nutrition:

Oscar fish has a big appetite and with its big mouth it is able to catch fish bigger than its mouth and gradually swallow the prey from the head to the tail. Scars eat a variety of live (such as bait fish and earthworms and red or so-called bloodworms) and processed (such as flaky, pelleted and even vegetable) foods and remember the person who feeds them. It is better to keep Oscars in an aquarium with a volume of more than 100 liters and feed them once a day.
