Aponogeton rigidifolius

Aponogeton rigidifolius is a species of fresh water plants native to Sri Lanka. In nature, it grows in deep water at a temperature of 68 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit (20 to 25 degrees Celsius) with a water pH of 2.7 in sandy soil.

The creeping rhizome of this plant is cylindrical and its thickness is about 5 inches (13 cm). The leaves remain submerged, are firm (almost leathery and immune to most fish and snails), and are about 8 to 23 inches (20 to 58 cm) long and 1 to 1/6 inch (2.5 to 1.4 cm) wide. The total height of this plant has been seen to reach 120 cm. The edge of the leaves has a wavy curve and parts of them are dark red. The inflorescence of the plant has a single spike with white flowers and small fruits.

This species is unique among Aponogentons in having a long rhizome instead of a tuber. The rhizome creeps along the surface and sprouts new leaves from it. This rhizome can be divided. The Aponogeton rigidifolius plant does not need a rest period to reproduce; But its growth is slow. When it takes root, it is a resistant plant.

This plant needs balanced light and tropical temperature and tolerates harder water compared to other Aponogentons. It is a suitable plant for the middle to the background of the aquarium. This plant rarely flowers in aquariums.
