Palaemonetes pugio

Dagger shrimp, saltwater to brackish shrimp, has a small and clear body with a yellow color spectrum and brown spots. It has a smooth coat, belly and three pairs of legs. The second pair is the strongest and the third pair has no claws. The body length reaches about 5 cm and the lifespan of this shrimp is about one year (6 to 13 months).

 

Living environment:

Found in riverine and tidal marsh habitats throughout the western Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico. These shrimps have been seen in waters between 17 and 38 degrees Celsius. They change their swimming depth in order to migrate to more favorable temperature levels; They have been collected to a depth of 14 meters.

Nutrition:

It feeds on a variety of items including microalgae and suspended food particles. Dagger shrimps themselves are eaten by fish.

 

Breeding:

They mature at the age of 1.5 to 2 months and are 15 to 18 mm long. Spawning time varies according to geographical location. In the Gulf of Mexico, the season runs roughly from April to November, and shrimp may spawn more than once per season.

Maintenance:

Salty to brackish water is suitable for these shrimps.
Dissolved oxygen needs between 6 and 11 mg/liter; It has been seen that they come out of the water in case of lack of oxygen.
They tolerate a wide temperature range of 17 to 38 degrees Celsius.
