ALP refers to a group of phosphatases that show their maximum activity at alkaline pH and are widely distributed in the liver, osteoblast, intestinal epithelium, kidney and placenta.
ALP increases physiologically in children and adolescents during the growth period, as well as in the third trimester of pregnancy. A significant increase in ALP is observed in cases such as external obstruction of the liver (gallstone, tumor, etc.), bone diseases (Paget's disease, bone cancer, etc.). Also, the activity of ALP enzyme increases moderately in internal hepatic obstruction, hepatitis, cirrhosis, osteomalacia, hyperparathyroidism, and during bone fracture healing.
