Amylase

Alpha-amylase is an enzyme that is secreted from the salivary glands and pancreas and helps in the digestion of starch by hydrolyzing the 4- and 1-alpha-glucosidar bonds. Amylase measurement in serum is mainly used in the diagnosis of pancreatic diseases (acute and chronic pancreatitis and carcinoma). In the course of an acute pancreatitis, a transient increase in amylase serum is observed, it reaches its maximum value 12 hours after the onset and returns to normal within 3 to 4 days. Increased amylase is also seen in other intra-abdominal lesions, ovarian or lung cancer, salivary gland ulceration, acute alchemy, renal failure, or the presence of macromyiasis in the blood (igG-amylase complex not filtered by glomeruli).
