Creatinine is obtained from the metabolism of creatine in a spontaneous reaction, and it can be a very good indicator for kidney function by excreting it through urine. Serum creatinine level is stable. An increase in serum creatinine along with an increase in serum urea indicates a decrease in renal filtration. Serum urea level is affected by factors such as diet, body water loss and protein metabolism, while these factors do not affect serum creatinine level. For this reason, the diagnostic value of measuring creatinine is higher than that of urea. Creatinine clearance is a good indicator for renal glomerular filtration. In a kidney transplant, any increase in serum creatinine, however small, can be a sign of transplant rejection. Muscle necrosis also increases creatinine in serum and urine.
