Glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase enzyme deficiency is the most common X-chromosome-related enzyme disorder in humans, which causes severe jaundice and bilirubin encephalopathy, mental retardation, and death in infants. This enzyme is the first key enzyme in petnose phosphate synthesis, which is involved in the production of NADPH.

Enzyme deficiency can cause acute hemolysis in people who are exposed to various oxidative stress such as infections, drugs and some chemicals and bean seeds.

Enzyme deficiency is diagnosed by measuring its activity in red blood cells. This activity should be measured when the patient has neither a recent blood transfusion nor a new hemolytic attack.
