65-70% of iron is stored in the hemoglobin structure and 20-25% is stored as ferritin in the cells. Plasma contains about 3 mg of iron, which is bound to transferrin. Serum iron concentration increases in hemochromatosis, liver damage and iron poisoning. A decrease in iron levels may be due to an increase in the body's need for iron, lack of iron in the diet, bleeding, or impaired gastrointestinal absorption. Serum iron levels are always interpreted with transferrin saturation information.
