Total Protein plus

Albumin constitutes 50-60% of the total human plasma proteins, and the rest mainly consists of globulins. Except for immunoglobulins, most plasma proteins are made by the liver. An increase in plasma volume (in salt retention syndrome, water intoxication) and its decrease can cause hypoproteinemia and hyperproteinemia, respectively. When the plasma volume is normal, the abnormal amount of protein is only caused by disorders that affect the concentration of albumin and immunoglobulins. Therefore, malabsorption, maldigestion, lack of protein in the diet and liver and kidney diseases lead to a decrease in protein in the blood. The occurrence of edema may be seen when the total protein concentration reaches less than 40 G/L. There is also a possibility of increased protein in the blood, such as hyperglobulinemia (multiple myeloma and infection).
