Creatine kinase is present in the form of MB isoenzymes only in cardiac muscle, MM in striated muscles and heart muscle, BB specifically in brain cells.

Serum CK measurement is used to diagnose and follow up heart muscle damage. In myocardial infarction, the amount of total CK and CK-MB increases rapidly and reaches its highest level 10-24 hours after the occurrence of infarction. The serum enzyme level returns to normal after 3-4 days. Values exceeding normal are also seen after muscle injuries.
