Ethylbenzene

Ethylbenzene is an organic compound with the formula C6H5CH2CH3. Highly flammable, colorless liquid with a gasoline-like odor. This monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbon is important in the petrochemical industry as an intermediate in the production of styrene, a precursor to polystyrene, a common plastic material. In 2012, more than 99% of ethylbenzene production was consumed in styrene production. Ethyl benzene is also used in the manufacture of other chemicals, in fuel and as a solvent in ink, rubber glue and paint. Ethylbenzene exposure can be determined by testing for breakdown products in urine.

Physical and chemical properties
Ethylbenzene is a colorless liquid that smells like gasoline with a sweet aroma, has a high evaporation rate and is highly flammable. Ethylbenzene has an odor threshold of 2.3 ppm and a melting point of -95 °C (-139 °F) and a boiling point of 136 °C (277 °F). It is classified as a monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbon because it is a compound that contains only carbon and hydrogen atoms.
