The picture above shows a shell and tube water cooler. The use of shell and tube heat exchangers has been common in the industry for more than 50 years, and gradually, with the increase of the heat transfer level and the reduction of the total length and dimensions, its construction costs have decreased. In this type of heat exchanger, cooling is done by circulating the hydraulic fluid around the tubes carrying the cooling fluid (water). It should be noted that when the cooling fluid passes through the pipe, the inner surface is gradually deposited and acts as an insulator. By using mechanical or chemical methods, the excess sediment can be removed and the efficiency of the converter can be increased. The amount of heat transfer required to reach the appropriate temperature in a hydraulic system can be calculated in different ways. For example, the heat produced during a limited period of operation of a system can be obtained from the difference between the total input energy and the useful mechanical work. Therefore, hydraulic systems with high efficiency need less cooling. Due to the fact that the accurate calculation of power losses and the amount of natural heat dissipation by the tank and pipes is a complex and difficult task, many designers base the calculation on a certain percentage of the total power of the system. The mentioned percentage is dependent on parameters such as the efficiency of piping components, tank level and past experiences. By multiplying this experimental percentage by the total power, the amount of power loss and as a result heat production is determined.
