Antimony trioxide

Antimony Trioxide is a chemical formula # Sb2O3, white powder and water soluble. It is the most commercially available antimony-based compound. The main use of antimony trioxide is in the manufacture of flame retardants (either flame retardant or flame retardant) used in the preparation of fire extinguishers that prevent the spread of fire in plastics and polymers. In fact, it increases the resistance of these materials to fire.

Antimony trioxide (ATO) is formed by the reaction of antimony trichloride (SbCl3) with water, which is used in combination with flame retardants, such as halogen compounds, usually based on chlorine or bromine and on borate. The combination of halides and antimony has a synergistic effect and is a key factor in the flame retardancy for polymers. They are used in electrical, plastic, paint, glue, sealant, rubber, textiles, leather and coatings. Antimony trioxide is also used as a matting agent in glass, enamel and ceramics. Some special pigments for rubber materials, plastics, adhesives, textiles, paper, etc. contain antimony trioxide. In addition, antimony trioxide is an effective polymerization catalyst in the production of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and rubber vulcanization and a friction additive in automotive brake pads.

The use of antimony trioxide (ATO) with a synergistic effect increases the efficiency of halogen flame retardants and thus reduces the amount of material required. The use of antimony trioxide in halogen flame retardants reduces cost and improves the retardant physical properties such as color stability. As a result, polymers containing this compound can be used in sensitive and potentially fire-resistant applications such as computers and TVs. Interestingly, antimony trioxide alone does not have a significant effect on flame retardancy.
