Shell and tube heat exchanger

The shell and tube heat exchanger consists of a large number of tubes containing fluid, whose outer part is in contact with another fluid, and heat transfer is possible through the intermediate surface, which is the body or wall of the tube, so the material of the tubes should be selected in such a way that, in addition to durability, it is also a good conductor of heat.
In the shell and tube heat exchanger, usually two plates (tube plate) made of metal are placed at the beginning and end of the exchanger, and holes are created on these plates according to the number of tubes inside the exchanger, and the tubes are connected to them through welding or mechanically.
The two ends of the converter, i.e. the front and the rear end of the converter, are designed and built in such a way that the fluid enters from one end of the converter and is directed to the entrance of the pipes, and after passing through the pipes, it enters the rear end and is collected there.

The fluid that passes through the shell should be directed in such a way that it makes the most contact with the outer surface of the pipes during the route and the heat transfer process takes place in the best way. To achieve this goal, a piece called Baffle is used.

Baffles are used for two purposes in shell and tube heat exchangers. Conducting fluid and holding pipes to prevent vibration and movement. By installing baffles, the flow of fluid in the shell becomes almost perpendicular to the flow of fluid inside the pipes, which increases the transfer of thermal energy and, as a result, increases work efficiency.
