As a result of evaporation, water leaves sediments that cause problems in heating and cooling systems. Also, such waters can include surface corrosion. These problems, in addition to stopping the system and the need to replace parts, increase various costs.
Sediment is created for two main reasons.
A- Changes in the chemical quality of water.
B - Decrease in solubility of solutes in water due to increase in temperature.
Sediments act as an insulating layer and reduce heat transfer significantly. These deposits in steam production systems, due to the reduction of heat transfer, reduce the power of steam production and lower the efficiency of the facilities, or in other words, increase the energy consumption to produce a certain amount of steam.
Due to the excessive increase in metal temperature (Over Heat), sediments destroy the structure of the metal and eventually burst it. To prevent the formation of sediments and to remove sediments, the formed sludge deposits are removed by adding chemicals to the water. Chemicals added to water should be enough to prevent sedimentation, but usually chemicals are used in excess of the stoichiometric amount.
In any case, before adding any chemical substance, the following points should be considered:
- Analysis and amount of sediment.
- Suitability of the type of inhibitor with the precipitant.
- Selection of precipitating agent according to the type of equipment.
Ease of work and safety issues.
- The price of consumables and the examination of economic aspects.
