H2S

Hydrogen sulfide gas or H2S is used in the field of crude oil and natural gas processing and wastewater treatment. It is said that this gas is obtained from microbial degradation in the absence of oxygen. Hydrogen sulfide gas is a colorless gas that is flammable. Also, this gas is toxic and corrosive. The smell of this gas is something like rotten eggs. Due to its toxicity, this gas prevents cells from breathing normally.

Hydrogen sulfide gas has many uses, such as the use of H2S in medicine, in the synthesis of organic compounds that contain sulfur, and also as an agent in the separation of heavy water.

As mentioned above, hydrogen sulfide gas is obtained from the destruction and decomposition of organic materials. This gas may even have an animal or plant source. Other sources of hydrogen sulfide gas include hot springs, natural gas fields, crude oil, etc., which are the main sources of H2S gas production.
Preparation of hydrogen sulfide gas

Hydrogen sulfide gas can be found in the water of some wells and in soils that contain organic substances in the absence of oxygen, i.e. anaerobic conditions. Usually, the amount of sulfide is less than 10 ppm, but sometimes more than this amount has been seen.

One of the methods of preparing and producing hydrogen sulfide gas that is used in the laboratory is to react a strong acid with sulfide. In fact, if we want to check the reaction of hydrogen sulfide gas production, it should be said that sulfuric acid, which is a strong acid, is reacted with iron sulfide, and hydrogen sulfide, or in other words, hydrogen sulfide, is produced.

The second method of hydrogen sulfide production is the use of sulfur. Water vapor acts on sulfur at high temperature and hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide are obtained. Meanwhile, hydrogen sulfide gas (H2S) can also be prepared by synthetic method. It means that sulfur and hydrogen react with each other and hydrogen sulfide gas is produced.
