Methane

Methane gas with the molecular formula CH4 has various uses in industry, including its use as a fuel. Methane is the head of the alkanes family, in fact, it can be said that methane gas is the simplest hydrocarbon. Under standard conditions, methane gas is a colorless and odorless gas and is lighter than air, and methane gas is the first compound in the category of hydrocarbons that is saturated. Methane gas is produced from the decomposition and decay of organic materials such as plants. These plants are usually found in marshes, that's why methane gas is also called marsh gas.

As you know, methane molecule is a symmetrical molecule, that is, one carbon has formed a single bond with four hydrogen atoms. At a pressure of one atmosphere, methane gas has a boiling point of -164 degrees Celsius. Methane gas can ignite in special conditions, i.e. concentration between 4.5 and 17%.
Preparation of methane gas

Methane gas is usually present in natural gas. Natural gas also contains some hydrocarbons and hydrogen and helium gases. Methane is formed in small amount due to anaerobic decomposition of organic matter. In fact, the temperature of methane gas production takes place at a temperature higher than the temperature of oil formation.

In addition to the fact that methane gas is found in natural gas, methane gas is produced under conditions of chemical reactions by gases in the atmosphere and hydrogen.
