    The company's founder, Basil Weixler, laid the foundation stone for the Bergader private cheese dairy in 1902 with a village cheese dairy. In the 1920s he developed a cheese that was similar to Roquefort, but used cow's milk instead of sheep's milk. The name “Bavarian Roquefort” came too close to the French model. Weixler lost the subsequent court case, but his popularity rose due to extensive press coverage. Since then, the cheese has been marketed under the name “Bergader Edelpilz”. After Basil Weixler's death in 1945, his daughter Charlotte Steffel took over the management. In 1979, Bergader was the first cheese dairy in Germany to be awarded the Golden Sugar Loaf for Bavaria blu, a soft blue cheese introduced in 1972. The granddaughter of the company founder, Beatrice Kress, has been running the company in the third generation of the family since 1997 - the Bergader plant in Waging am See
    In the more than hundred years of development of the private cheese dairy, other brands and varieties have been brought onto the market in addition to the “Bergader Edelpilz” and “Bavaria blu” so that their pastures and meadows are either over 700 meters or that they are at an altitude of 500 to 700 meters above sea level with a slope of at least 18%. This cheese is sold under the brand name "Bergader Bergbauern".
