Peat is an organic material formed from decaying and dead mosses under anaerobic conditions. The peat needed for the preparation of covering materials is basically found in Germany, and the formation of peat has been started since 6000 BC. During 8000 years, a layer of peat with a thickness of 2.5 meters has been created. In the areas where peat moss is extracted, there is a hard and uneven surface layer that gradually turns into black peat. This uneven and hard layer is the youngest type of peat formed by marsh mosses. Black peat is older and is a mixture of marsh and plant remains.
